Bio-Based Acrylic Medium
Bio-Based Matte Gel
Overview
The resin base of a typical pro acrylic medium is made from 100% petrol-derived ingredients sourced from fossil fuels and other non-renewable substances. For Liquitex Bio-Based we’ve halved this, replacing ingredients with ones from renewable, biological sources. These come from living or once-living organisms like corn, soy, sugarcane and algae which can be regrown or replenished relatively quickly through natural or farming processes.
Key features
- Reduces surface shine, increases color depth and transparency
- Extends your color further without affecting acrylic stability
- Increases viscosity of soft body paints, giving a thicker consistency
- Slows drying time and enhances appearance of brush marks
- Primes rough exterior walls for gesso application before mural painting
How to use
- Can be thinned by diluting with up to 25% water - distilled water will give best results
- Mix as much as you like into acrylic color to create the viscosity and transparency you want - the more you add, the more transparent your color will become
- Mix into Heavy Acrylic/Heavy Body Acrylic to extend volume and maintain viscosity
- Mix into Soft Body or Acrylic Ink to extend volume and thicken
- This is semi-opaque when wet, transparent when dry - when used very thickly it may dry semi-opaque

WHAT DOES BIO-BASED MEAN?
Let’s dive in.
As well as the resin, every other ingredient that has a bio-based alternative has been replaced and we’ve avoided any components or pigments derived from animals. As more bio-based ingredients become available, we’ll incorporate them.
