Professional Mediums
Satin Varnish Spray
Key Features
- 100% acrylic polymer varnish adds a satin sheen, protects and resists dirt retention
- Increases brightness and color saturation and dries clear to a flexible, non-tacky, hard surface
- Improves surface durability - ideal when shipping or exhibiting
- Resists discoloration - yellowing and fogging - caused by humidity, heat and UV
- Semi-opaque when wet, transparent when dry
How to Use
- Before varnishing ensure paint surface is fully dry (72 hours-two weeks depending on thickness)
- Ensure your space is well ventilated and dirt and dust-free. As this is permanent, do a patch test first
- Place the artwork flat on a surface - always varnish horizontally
- Use long, even strokes, covering the surface top to bottom while moving from one side to the other - don't go over bits you have missed, but leave to dry and then re-varnish area
- Apply 1-2 thin coats, allowing at least 24 hours dry time between coats. If you require more than two layers, first use Gloss Varnish as a base layer and build to your desired thickness, then apply Satin Varnish as your top coat

Lightfastness | How long will it resist fading?
- Each pigment is rated on scale by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). Liquitex paints are all rated ASTM I (excellent) or II (very good) and considered permanent and lightfast for 50-100+ years in gallery conditions. Our metallic and fluorescent colors are naturally less lightfast.
Opacity/Transparency | We communicate opacity/transparency clearly on our packaging based on three categories:
- Opaque: these colors do not allow light to pass through the color layer and offer the best coverage or hiding power.
- Semi-opaque: these allow for some light to pass through the color layer and sit between opaque and transparent colors
- Transparent: these colors offer the least coverage and allow light to pass through the color layer to the surface below.
- Series:
Pigments come from a variety of sources and have different prices according to their rarity, processing and milling costs. We group our colors into a 'series' pricing structure according to how much each one takes to make. Series 1 colors contain the most inexpensive pigments, while Series 4 and 5 color contain the most expensive pigments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Other creatives have asked us...
Do I need to wear a mask when spraying Liquitex Varnish?
Wear a mask and maintain good ventilation when using Liquitex Varnish. Use a suitable respirator for the working environment.
Why do I need to varnish my acrylic work?
Varnishing acrylic works protects against damage, dirt, UV light, unifies sheen, and enhances color. Liquitex offers Basics and Professional varnishes.
Can Liquitex Spray Varnish be used on top of traditional gouache to make it waterproof?
To waterproof gouache on canvas, you can use Liquitex Permanent Spray Varnish. However, subsequent paint layers may not adhere well to the varnished surface.
How do I look after my Spray Varnish and stop nozzle clog?
Prevent nozzle clogs by shaking aerosol cans before use and storing them above 15°C and spraying propellant to clear the nozzle. Hold the container upside and spray for a couple of seconds before and after use- this will send a spray of propellant only out of the nozzle and clear it.
How long should I wait between applying each layer of Liquitex Permanent Spray Varnish?
Ensure the artwork is fully dry before varnishing and allow at least 12 hours drying between coats of varnish.
