Lightfastness | How long will it resist fading?
- Each pigment is rated on scale by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). Liquitex paints are all rated ASTM I (excellent) or II (very good) and considered permanent and lightfast for 50-100+ years in gallery conditions. Our metallic and fluorescent colors are naturally less lightfast.
Opacity/Transparency | We communicate opacity/transparency clearly on our packaging based on three categories:
- Opaque: these colors do not allow light to pass through the color layer and offer the best coverage or hiding power.
- Semi-opaque: these allow for some light to pass through the color layer and sit between opaque and transparent colors
- Transparent: these colors offer the least coverage and allow light to pass through the color layer to the surface below.
- Series:
Pigments come from a variety of sources and have different prices according to their rarity, processing and milling costs. We group our colors into a 'series' pricing structure according to how much each one takes to make. Series 1 colors contain the most inexpensive pigments, while Series 4 and 5 color contain the most expensive pigments.
MEET LIQUTEX ACRYLIC GOUACHE
INTENSE. ULTRA-PIGMENTED.
Thought you knew gouache? Think again.
Acrylic Gouache rewrites the rules.
Giving you the color intenstity you want, with no visible brush strokes, no cracks, no need to dilute, just a permanent, water-resistant formula that performs every time.
And because its solid, flat-matte finish doesn’t reflect light, Acrylic Gouache is perfect for photographing, scanning and mixing with digital effects, illustrations, and designs.
See what happens when you think differently.
EXTREME COLOR
Think of gouache, think of saturated color. And ours packs a punch. The technology inside is complex, taking two years in the lab to develop. The innovative formula has a super-concentration of pure, ultra-fine pigments dispersed evenly in a flexible acrylic vehicle. It contains the highest intensity of pigment in any of our paints, giving you serious color payoff every time.
FLAT & MATTE
Gouache is traditionally the go-to for flat, matte results. Our Acrylic Gouache formula is no exception, giving you solid matte color without reflections or brush strokes. Because it doesn’t reflect the light, it’s perfect for scanning and mixing with digital effects – making it ideal for illustration and design work.
HIGH OPACITY
Acrylic Gouache pushes the opacity of each color to its limits. Gouache is traditionally known for its solid color, as well as its tendency to crack when dry. The two attributes go hand in hand, so when designing our Acrylic Gouache we looked at the problem differently. We set out to ensure you get the flexibility and smooth application you expect from an acrylic, with the best opacity possible.
See the difference in opacity when comparing naturally transparent Ultramarine Blue (red shade) in Soft Body (top) and Acrylic Gouache (bottom).
NON CRACKING
A lasting, crack-free finish. Due to the high level of pigment, most gouaches can crack when drying. Ours sets a new benchmark. The acrylic vehicle brings flexibility to the paint film, giving you a reliable, non-cracking finish. See our gouache on the right, shown against a regular acrylic gouache.
FLUIDITY
Other gouaches need water to ease their way. Our acrylic gouache gives you a creamy, fluid texture with superb brush out, straight from the bottle. Application feels effortless and flowing, with no drag - making it perfect for large area coverage or fine detail. And because you don’t need to add water, your colors keep their true vibrancy.
ARCHIVAL
On a client’s wall. In a gallery. Your work needs to stay as you intended. As with all Liquitex products, the pigments in Acrylic Gouache have passed extensive tests for lightfastness. Each pigment is rated according to the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), and we only use pigments rated ASTM I or II*. This means your work will have the greatest archival permanence possible – at least 50 years+ in gallery conditions – with no color shifting or fading, to stay vibrant and true.
*Some pigments, such as fluorescents, are not rated
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Other creatives have asked us...
I cut the nozzle on my Soft Body or Acrylic Gouache too far down -can I get another one from you?
You can't get replacement nozzles for Liquitex Soft Body; but can use a nozzle from another bottle.
Is Acrylic Gouache as flexible as normal acrylics?
Liquitex Acrylic Gouache is flexible like normal acrylics, with improved performance. However due to the intensely high level of pigment solids we use, the formula is a little less flexible than a paint like Soft Body. Traditional gouaches are known for their cracking and inflexibility due to their pigment load, so our chemists have balanced this need for concentrated color with acrylic flexibility, to give us something with a much improved performance.
If I want to varnish my Acrylic Gouache piece, what should I use to ensure I keep the flat matte finish?
For varnishing Liquitex Acrylic Gouache while preserving a matte finish, use professional matte varnishes.
I thought gouache was always opaque, some of your Acrylic Gouache colors aren't. Why?
Liquitex Acrylic Gouache offers mostly opaque colors, maintaining a balance between opacity and fluidity. The range is made up of mostly opaque colors with a few semi-opaque colors.
How much pigment does your Acrylic Gouache contain?
The pigment-to-base ratio in Liquitex Acrylic Gouache varies by color to maximize intensity.
How does Acrylic Gouache work with your mediums, particularly gloss and matte mediums?
All of our materials are compatible but if you want to keep Liquitex Acrylic Gouache's formula as matte and opaque as intended, we would recommend using a Liquitex gel medium rather than a fluid medium. Acrylic Gouache works well with Liquitex gels and modeling pastes, depending on the effect desired. Maintain the matte finish of Liquitex Acrylic Gouache by using matte varnishes.
I cut the nozzle on my Soft Body or Acrylic Gouache too far down -can I get another one from you?
You can't get replacement nozzles for Liquitex Soft Body; but can use a nozzle from another bottle.
My regular gouache often cracks when I've applied it, will your Acrylic Gouache?
